This Blog was born from a wet day in Germany, looking at one of the many war memorials in that country and further investigation which led me to notice a lack of reference material with regards to the German Army in World War One.

My work on this project has been made easier by the World Wide Web, but with the information tools at my disposal it has been a constant battle to ensure that the correct information has been included.

This Blog is intended for reference, and will hopefully enable those with an interest in the German Army of World War One to look up with confidence the various units and organisations which contributed to the German war machine.

The Alpine Corps


This elite Army unit was formed in May 1915.

The Alpine Corps was formed in 1915, formed as a result of experiences against other Alpine/Mountain troops.

The Corps fought against the Italians in the Dolomite Mountains  before a brief stop in France.  It was then moved to the Serbian Front.  In March 1916 it fought at Verdun, where it lost 70% of its strength.

In July 1916 it lost the 3rd Jaeger Regiment and its 2nd Brigade Headquarters.  It then became a triangular Division.

In August 1916 it fought in the Romanian Campaign.  In August 1917 it returned to the Western Front, before being returned to Romania as a result of the Karensky Offensive.

 In September 1917 it fought at the battle of Caporetto, as part of the 12th Battle of the Isonzo.  After this offensive against the Italians finished the unit was sent to France where it took part in the Kaisers Offensive.

It ended the war in the Balkans.
