This Blog was born from a wet day in Germany, looking at one of the many war memorials in that country and further investigation which led me to notice a lack of reference material with regards to the German Army in World War One.

My work on this project has been made easier by the World Wide Web, but with the information tools at my disposal it has been a constant battle to ensure that the correct information has been included.

This Blog is intended for reference, and will hopefully enable those with an interest in the German Army of World War One to look up with confidence the various units and organisations which contributed to the German war machine.

4th Bavarian Infantry Division


This Peacetime Army unit was formed in November 1815

The 4th Bavarian and 3rd Bavarian Divisions combined to form the II Bavarian Corps


  7th Royal Bavarian Infantry Brigade
5th (Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig von Hessen) Royal Bavarian Infantry Regiment
  9th Royal Bavarian Infantry Regiment
  8th Royal Bavarian Infantry Brigade 

 Transferred to the 33rd Reserve Division at the start of the war, on 3rd August 1916 it was transferred to the 14th Royal Bavarian Infantry Division, and on 15th September 1918 to the 6th Royal Bavarian Reserve Infantry Division.
  5th Reserve Royal Bavarian Infantry Regiment
8th Reserve Royal Bavarian Infantry Regiment
  4th Royal Bavarian Artillery Brigade
  2/2nd Bavarian Pioneer Battalion

At the beginning of the war the Division also included the 2nd Bavarian Jager Battalion, and the 5th (Arch Duke Friedrich of Austria) Light Horse Regiment.
